Southbound on the CDT

The Walkumentary is awesome - DISCO actually spend month editing the footage, with the same stamina that he needed for hiking the CDT in 145 days - which is a new record on the CDT, except for a few exceptions!
Excellent film! I like to call this stuff 'hiker porn'. It was entertaining and informative, just like real porn.
Many thanks to Disco for making this great movie and sharing it with the hiking community.
The Walkumentary was fun, well-paced, realistic and beautiful. It gives a well-rounded perspective of all aspects of a long distance thru-hike, but didn't give away too much either, leaving plenty of trail intrigue for aspiring hikers.
The Walkumentary gives you a great view into the world of the CDT, from the lovely scenery, to the blisters and ingrown toenails, to the pigout townstops, the wildlife, and the dirt, grime, and sublime... all the crazy moments along a long trail. I feel like I actually hiked the CDT (almost!)...
As with hiking a long trail, at the beginning, the walkumentary miles seem to roll past slowly...almost expectedly...then...the strange, enjoyable quirks begin to emerge. The "constraints" of nature take the place social programming and the fun begins. The most intruiging sequences are definitely while and after dropping out of the CO snow and into the mystical desert.
Good work, mang.

Here's to the first hiker film to feature real-life feces...or was that fake?
Seriously, this film made me want to strap on my pack and see this trail. I've had reservations in the past on the CDT, but feel much more comfortable giving this a go. Especially if I can find folks as cool as your crew on the trail. Thanks Disco for making a great movie and introducing me to frontpacking.
Just enough fabulous scenery, camaradarie and commiseration to whet the thru-hike appetite. Ooooh, I can't wait!
Disco, thanks for the fascinating preview of what awaits me when I start my sobo/flip in a couple of weeks.
Super! I loved the scenery captured and got a good feeling of the CDT challenge. A must see for any long distance hiker.

Wes and I just got done watching The Walkumentary and it was AWESOME! Looks like quite an adventure and you did an amazing job capturing your experience! LOVED it!
Praise for The Walkumentary...
"You've never seen anything like it!! A terrific thriller, totally enthralling." "A superbly directed, brilliantly acted, spellbinder original." "The viewer is drawn into the life a thru-hiker...one can almost smell the rotting carcass in the water source!!!"

Awesome Job

Wow!! I'm very impressed. I laughed my ass off while watching this last night, then pretty much cried along with POD at the end - thanks so much for making this. Very good documentary. Encapsulates so well the feeling of long distance hiking. Nice work.

DVD arrived today. BadAss Turtle and I warmed up some pizza, popped open some cold ones and fired it up. All in all ...I think our favorite part was Speedo (Matti) singing about caterpillar poop at the end. He needs to record that and get copywrite protection !! Could become a CDT themesong.
I thought that the Walkumentary was well worth the money that I didn't spend. :p
I felt that it gave a good presentation to what walking on the CDT would be like and enjoyed watching it. The only complaint that I can come up with is that I would have liked to see more of some of the scenic highlights of the trail. But overall, I give it 2 thumbs up and recommend that everyone interested in the CDT should see it.
Your disk arrived almost instantly. We watched it immediately and will rerun it many times. What a trip, seemed like we were with you but without the blisters. Really great production, hikers are going to enjoy this disk.
Great film, Disco. Thanks for carrying the video camera so that the rest of us can see (or remember, for those who've been there) what the CDT is all about.

Disco,
I really enjoyed watching your jorney on the CDT, wish I could have been there. Very entertaining and well edited...look out Sundance Festival...
Really enjoyed your footage you put together. Lots of interesting characters...well scened...a little lag in some places (don't know it was my DVD player or the DVD)...good scoring...a little jackassy feel at times..but hey, if I was flipping through the channels and came accross the walkumentary...i'd stop to check out POD. Good job.

Wonderful film! I checked the mail obsessively until it came and it did not disappoint. I loved how you interviewed everyone in the group and showed the scenery. I also appreciated that most of the narration was left up to the hikers in the midst of hiking. Your editing and selection was superb. This film was funny, absorbing, exciting, and thoughtful. Well done! Thank you!
Have watched several films on the AT and PCT, but there are few on DVD concerning the CDT (not to say only one).
This film catches the essence of long distance hikihg.
It gives great inspiration and is really contagious since you absolutely want to hike it afterwards!
Thank you for this wonderful film and... waiting for your future productions!
Walkumentary was a blast of a film. It is the best (albeit only) documentary on the CDT I've seen. Well done. Nicely edited. Lotsa poo. Funny as hell. Great to see so many hiker trash friends from the '04 PCT. A great mountain fix for this flatlander with trail dreams. As trail docs go, and I've seen more than a few, this ranks way up there in terms of quality footage, humor, and a kick-ass, edgy soundtrack. Bravo!

Hey ... Just came back from the ALDHA Gathering in Gettysburg, where they showed this film on Sunday night (last night!). It was awesome, guys. What is Speedo's real first name? He looks and sounds so familiar, and was definitely one of the highlights of the film. Has he done the AT yet to get his Triple Crown? Nice to see Mags, too. He's a favorite of ours at ALDHA East.
I think I've watched the Walkumentary about 5 times in the last 3 days. Hilarious! And Disco does a great job capturing the essence of hiking a long trail. Now I need to go and hike the CDT too. Thanks a lot Disco, as if my life wasn't already ruined enough from the PCT...
Cheers everybody!
Scrote
Disco, Thanks to you and Yogi for presenting this fabulous slice of trail life to us at ALDHA-East.
Wondering if you are going to submit it to any festivals....hint?
My high school video and film students have some questions....camera? batteries? GarageBand? Printed cover?
If you are ever east (Maine) please stop in.
Alien
Alien, thanks for your gracious comments about The Walkumentary. I'd e-mail you directly about the questions your film class had but don't have an e-mail address for you so I'll just respond here directly via a new post:
Camera: Sony Mini-DV DCR-HC46
Batteries: Two 120-Minute InfoLithium Battery + Sony Travel Charger
Video Editing Software: iMovie 06'
Music Creation: I looped 3 of the tracks together myself on GarageBand 06' and the rest of the music was created by friends.
Printed Cover: Discmakers.com whom I highly recommend . . . they printed the jackets, the on-disc design and duplicated the DVD's at a great price.
External Hard Drive: Lacie 320 Gb Extreme with Triple Interface . . . I basically connected my MiniDV cam directly to my LaCie and then the LaCie to my laptop via a Firewire 400 cable.
Computer Used: iBook G4 laptop
Let me know if you have any other questions about how I put The Walkumentary together. I'd be happy to help. And a big Hello to your Film class! If they have any questions they can e-mail me directly at lawtong@hotmail.com.
Best, Disco
Great job! I've just added it to
the videos for the CDT at http://booksforhikers.com
This was a great way to see what the CDT is all about and how rural the trail still is. I've watched it more times then I can remember and think its one of the great hiking videos of all time.
I just watched it for the second time since I bought it for myself over Christmas. I enjoyed it just as much the second time around! The best part was seeing some of the scenery that I had only read about. I hope you folks have a screening at the 2008 Trail Days to tease all of the future Triple Crowners (congrats on that achievement).
Tom
My favorite hiking DVD! I love watching over and over and still laugh every time.
I am also obsessed with P.O.D.'s sunglasses, what brand are they?
So much fun. I smiled, I laughed, I started dreaming about my next hike. Thank you for that.
Deena . . . I'm stoked you liked the show. I asked P.O.D. about the sunglasses and she says that she still has them and that they are buried in a box and will dig them out and find out what brand they are. I think they are some Smith sunglasses she got from Sierratradingpost.com but not sure. Check back soon. Thanks for posting a comment.
Jay, I'm stoked you also enjoyed the show. Nice bio photo by the way. I'm always planning my next hike . . . been a bad habit of mine for the last 10 years!
Hi Disco – I’m sure you have gotten rave reviews from everyone who has watched and enjoyed your Walkumentary – my comments will be no exception. My good friend Jim Keener (Joyful Jim, PCT 2004) sent me the DVD and it went straight to the Dell. You have done a wonderful job of capitalizing on the excitement of a scenic trail thru-hike, and your cast of characters brings it to life. While it is an extremely entertaining production, the sad part is that no one who has not completed a thru-hike of a major trail can really experience the joy, pain and magic of this major accomplishment. And you and P.O.D. are Triple Crowners! Congrats. I hope you are able to produce another DVD of similar vein – I’ll be in line to purchase. Thank you! Old Goat
POD and Disco and the rest of the gang were very entertaining. The scenery was awesome. Can't say I'm ready to try a thru-hike, but definitely want to section hike it. Would love to hear what some of the favorite sections were. Especially would like to hear about the Gila, Wind River, Weminuche, Bob Marshall, RMNP and Glacier. Just a few of the places I'd like to hit.
Anyway, thanks for giving me and my wife (CityGirl) a glimpse into the life of a thru-hiker. She even said she'd be interested in some section hikes.
Enjoyed watching the walkumentary- we have just returned to scotland after hiking the CDT this year 2009 and the dvd represents the cdt well and in a fun way!
thanks again disco and pod !
